Terms of Service
Last updated: August 1, 2026
1. Introduction and Acceptance
Welcome to Lowen Library. Lowen Library is a paid subscription reading room and full-text search engine for the published works of Alexander Lowen. It is operated by The Alexander Lowen Foundation ("the Foundation", "we", "us", or "our"). The library is available at lowen.app, and you can learn more about the Foundation at lowenfoundation.org.
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a legal agreement between you and the Foundation. They govern your access to and use of the Lowen Library website, its content, and all related features (together, the "Service").
By creating an account, starting a free trial, subscribing, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy, which is part of this agreement. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
Please read these Terms carefully. They include important limits on our liability (Section 13), a disclaimer that the content is not professional advice (Section 12), and terms about how disputes are handled (Section 17).
2. Who May Use the Service
You must be at least the age of majority in your place of residence, and able to enter into a binding contract, to create an account or subscribe. The Service is intended for adults and is not directed to children. If you are under the age of majority, you may not use the Service.
If you use the Service on behalf of an organization, you confirm that you are authorized to accept these Terms for that organization.
3. Accounts
To read the works and use most features, you need an account.
Creating an account. You can create an account directly on the site, or you can subscribe first and create your account afterward. If you subscribe before creating an account, the account is created from the email address you enter at checkout, and you then set a password on a welcome page.
Sign-in. You can sign in with an email and password, or with a one-time email magic link. You can reset a forgotten password by email.
Credentials. Our authentication is provided by Supabase. Supabase stores and manages your login credentials. We never store your password. Please see Section 11 for more about third-party services.
Accurate information. You agree to provide accurate and complete information and to keep it current, including a valid email address.
Changing your email address. You can change the email address on your account from the Account page. For your protection, we ask for your current password and send a confirmation to both the old and the new address, and the change takes effect only when both are confirmed. We do not make this change simply because someone asks us to by email, because an email does not establish who is asking. If you no longer have access to your old address, we can still help, but we will first ask you to establish that the account is yours by other means, such as details of the payment on the subscription. We may decline where we are not satisfied, and we may take time to review.
Your responsibility. You are responsible for keeping your login secure and for all activity that happens under your account. Do not share your password. Tell us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission.
Personal accounts. Accounts are personal to you. They are for a single individual and may not be shared with, sold to, or transferred to anyone else.
4. The Service and Its Content
Lowen Library is an online reading room and search engine. It lets you read the published works of Alexander Lowen and search their full text within the app.
In-app reading only. All reading happens inside the app. There are no file downloads, no ebook files to keep, and no offline copies. A subscription grants you a personal license to read the works online. It does not give you ownership of any book or any copy of any book. (Offline reading may be offered as a feature in the future, but it is not offered now.)
A growing library. The library grows over time as more works are added. We may add, update, reorganize, or remove content, features, and functionality at any time.
Availability. We work to keep the Service available and reliable, but we do not guarantee that it will always be available, uninterrupted, or error free. Access may be affected by maintenance, technical issues, or events outside our control.
5. Subscriptions, Billing, and Renewals
Plans. We offer the following plans, all of which give the same full access to the whole library:
- Monthly: $25 per month.
- Annual: $150 per year.
- Lifetime: a one-time payment of $449, currently offered at a founding price of $299 through December 31, 2026.
Free trial. Monthly and annual plans begin with a 14-day free trial for first-time subscribers only, one per customer. A payment method is required to start the trial, but nothing is charged during it. See Section 6 for details.
When you are charged. For the monthly and annual plans, if you do not cancel before your free trial ends, your plan begins and your card is charged. If you subscribe without a trial, your card is charged when you subscribe.
Automatic renewal. Monthly and annual subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period, at the then-current price for your plan, until you cancel. By subscribing, you authorize us and our payment processor to charge your payment method for each renewal until you cancel.
Lifetime. The Lifetime plan is a single payment. It does not renew and is not billed again. Lifetime access continues for as long as we operate the Service. Lifetime does not guarantee access for any fixed number of years. If we permanently discontinue the Service, we will give Lifetime members reasonable advance notice. If we permanently discontinue the Service within 12 months of your Lifetime purchase, we may, at our discretion, offer you a pro-rated refund.
Price changes. Prices may change. Any change applies to future billing periods, not to a period you have already paid for, and we will give you advance notice before a change takes effect. If you do not agree to a new price, you can cancel before it applies.
Taxes. Prices do not include taxes. Applicable taxes may be added where required.
Payment processing. Payments are processed by Stripe. You enter your card details on Stripe's checkout page. We never see or store your card number. Our records store only your Stripe customer ID, your Stripe subscription ID, your plan, your status, and your current period end. Your use of Stripe is subject to Stripe's own terms and privacy policy.
Student and hardship rates. Reduced student and hardship rates are available on request. To ask for one, write to the Foundation at connect@lowenfoundation.org, and we can provide a code.
6. Free Trial
The free trial applies to the monthly and annual plans and has the following terms:
- It is available to first-time subscribers only, and is limited to one per customer.
- It lasts 14 days.
- A valid payment method is required to start it.
- Nothing is charged during the trial.
- If you do not cancel before the trial ends, your plan begins and your card is charged the plan price.
The free trial is your risk-free window to decide whether the Service is right for you. You can cancel at any time before the trial ends from your account, and you will not be charged.
7. Cancellation and Refunds
How to cancel. You can cancel at any time from your account, which opens the Stripe billing portal. Cancellation stops future renewals.
Effect of cancellation. After you cancel a monthly or annual subscription, your access continues until the end of the period you have already paid for. Monthly and annual subscriptions are not prorated or refunded for the unused part of a paid period.
Refunds. Monthly and annual subscriptions are generally non-refundable once a period has been charged. The free trial is the risk-free window for those plans.
Lifetime money-back guarantee. Lifetime purchases carry a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you request a refund within 30 days of your Lifetime purchase, we will refund it. To request a refund, contact us at connect@lowenfoundation.org.
Chargebacks. If you dispute a valid charge with your bank or card issuer instead of contacting us, we may suspend or terminate your account. If you think a charge is wrong, please reach out to us first so we can help.
8. Intellectual Property and Your License
Ownership. The works of Alexander Lowen and all other content in the Service are protected by copyright and other laws. They are owned by the Foundation and its rights holders. The Service itself, including its design, software, text, graphics, and search functionality, is owned by the Foundation and its licensors. We do not transfer any ownership to you.
Your license. Subject to these Terms and your active subscription, we grant you a personal, non-commercial, revocable, non-transferable, non-exclusive license to read the works online within the app for your own reading, study, and research.
What is not allowed. You may not, and may not help or permit anyone else to:
- Download, save, or otherwise make copies of the works or any part of them.
- Scrape, harvest, or use bots, crawlers, or any automated means to collect or extract content.
- Redistribute, share, sell, sublicense, or otherwise make the content available to others.
- Publicly display, perform, broadcast, or publish the content.
- Create derivative works from the content.
- Use the content to train, fine-tune, or develop any artificial intelligence or machine-learning system or model.
- Republish the content in any form or medium.
Fair-use citations. Generating and saving citations or short quotations for your own personal, scholarly use within the bounds of fair use is permitted. This does not allow you to reproduce or share the works, or substantial parts of them, beyond what fair use allows.
Copyright complaints. We respect intellectual property rights. If you believe that content in the Service infringes your copyright or other rights, please contact us at connect@lowenfoundation.org with enough detail to review your concern. Please include the work you claim is infringed, the material you are concerned about and where it appears in the Service, your contact information, and a statement of your good-faith belief that the use is not authorized by the rights holder or the law. We will review your notice and respond appropriately, which may include removing the material.
9. Your Content
The Service lets you create your own material, such as bookmarks, notes, saved searches, saved citations, and collections with names you choose ("Your Content").
You own Your Content. Your Content remains yours.
License to us. You grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to store, process, and display Your Content back to you so that we can operate the Service and provide these features to you. We use this license only to run the Service for you.
Your responsibility. You are responsible for Your Content and for making sure you have the right to create and store it. Do not use these features to store unlawful material or material that infringes the rights of others.
Removal. We may remove Your Content that violates these Terms or the law. If your account is deleted or terminated, Your Content may be deleted as described in our Privacy Policy.
Feedback. If you send us suggestions, ideas, or feedback about the Service, you grant us a perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free license to use them for any purpose, without any obligation to you.
10. Acceptable Use and Prohibited Conduct
You agree to use the Service only for lawful purposes and in line with these Terms. You may not:
- Share your account or your login with anyone, or let anyone else use your access.
- Use bots, scrapers, crawlers, or any automated means to access the Service or to extract content in bulk.
- Circumvent, disable, or interfere with the paywall, access controls, security features, or usage limits of the Service.
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to derive the source code of the Service, except where the law does not allow this restriction.
- Resell, rent, or commercially exploit access to the Service.
- Use the Service in any way that is unlawful, fraudulent, or harmful, or that disrupts or overloads the Service or its infrastructure.
- Attempt to gain unauthorized access to any account, system, or data.
11. Third-Party Services
The Service relies on a small number of third-party providers to function:
- Stripe, for payment processing.
- Google, if you choose "Continue with Google" for sign-in.
- Supabase, for database and authentication hosting.
- Vercel, for application hosting.
Your use of these third-party services is subject to their own terms and privacy policies. We are not responsible for third-party services, and their inclusion does not mean we endorse them. Our Privacy Policy explains what data these providers handle.
12. Disclaimers
The Service and all content are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. To the fullest extent allowed by law, we disclaim all implied warranties, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error free, secure, or free of harmful components, or that any content will meet your needs.
Not professional advice. The works of Alexander Lowen concern bioenergetic analysis and the connection between the body and emotional life. They are provided for reading, study, and research only. The content is not medical, psychological, psychotherapeutic, or professional advice, and it is not a substitute for advice from a qualified professional. Nothing in the Service creates a therapist-client, doctor-patient, or other professional relationship. Do not use the content to diagnose or treat any condition. Always consult a qualified health or mental-health professional about any question you have regarding your health or well-being. If you are experiencing a medical or mental-health emergency, contact your local emergency services immediately.
13. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent allowed by law, the Foundation and its officers, directors, employees, volunteers, and providers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, loss of goodwill, or loss of profits, arising out of or relating to your use of, or inability to use, the Service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.
To the fullest extent allowed by law, our total liability for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim, or one hundred U.S. dollars ($100).
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of the above may not apply to you. In that case, our liability is limited to the greatest extent allowed by law.
14. Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the Foundation and its officers, directors, employees, volunteers, and providers from and against any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, that arise out of or relate to your use of the Service, Your Content, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any law or the rights of any third party.
15. Suspension and Termination
By you. You may stop using the Service at any time and may cancel your subscription as described in Section 7.
By us. We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service, in whole or in part, if you breach these Terms, if we are required to by law, or to protect the Service, its content, or other users.
Effect. When your access ends, your license to read the works ends, and you must stop using the Service. Sections that by their nature should survive termination will survive, including those on intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnification, and governing law. If we terminate your account for breach of these Terms, you are not entitled to any refund.
16. Changes to the Service and to These Terms
We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time, including adding or removing content and features. If we permanently discontinue the Service, the treatment of Lifetime members is described in Section 5.
We may also update these Terms from time to time. If we make a material change, we will give reasonable notice, for example by posting the updated Terms with a new "Last updated" date or by contacting you. Changes take effect when posted, unless we say otherwise. By continuing to use the Service after changes take effect, you accept the updated Terms. If you do not agree to the changes, please stop using the Service and cancel your subscription.
17. Governing Law and Disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Vermont, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. The Service is operated from the United States.
Informal resolution first. If you have a concern or a dispute, please contact us first at connect@lowenfoundation.org. We will try in good faith to resolve it with you. Most concerns can be resolved this way, and we ask that you give us the chance to do so before starting any formal proceeding.
Venue. If a dispute is not resolved informally, it will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Vermont, and you and the Foundation agree to the personal jurisdiction of those courts, unless the parties agree to another method of resolution.
18. General Provisions
Severability. If any part of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the rest stays in effect, and the unenforceable part is limited or removed to the smallest extent needed.
Entire agreement. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy and any terms shown at the point of purchase, are the entire agreement between you and the Foundation about the Service, and they replace any earlier agreements on the same subject.
No waiver. If we do not enforce a provision, that is not a waiver of our right to enforce it later.
Assignment. You may not assign or transfer these Terms or your account without our consent. We may assign these Terms to a successor, for example in connection with a merger, reorganization, or transfer of the Service.
Force majeure. We are not responsible for any delay or failure to perform caused by events beyond our reasonable control, such as natural disasters, outages, or failures of third-party providers.
Electronic communications. You consent to receive all agreements, notices, disclosures, and other communications from us electronically, by email to the address on your account or by posting within the Service, and you agree that this satisfies any legal requirement that such communications be in writing.
Notices. We may give you notices by email to the address on your account or by posting them within the Service. You can send notices to us at connect@lowenfoundation.org.
19. Contact
